Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is among the favorite candidates to be named the new PSV boss.

The Dutchman is currently in charge of the club's reserve team having coached the Under-18s for three years up until last summer.

Reports from the Netherlands from ED indicate that the 45-year-old is the first-choice candidate to replace outgoing PSV first-team boss Roger Schmidt who confirmed that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season after failing to agree on a new contract in Eindhoven.

The club is currently second in the Eredivisie table, just two points behind leaders Ajax, and hopes that they can pip their rivals to the title this season.

Van Nistelrooy reportedly has the backing of Marcel Brands, the ex-Everton director of football who will become PSV's new chief executive in the summer, and talks are underway between the duo about the job.

Reports suggest that Fred Rutten who managed PSV between 2009 and 2012 could also join Van Nistelrooy by assisting him in the dugout.

The 59-year-old was most recently at the helm of Belgian side Anderlecht before leaving in April 2019 and boasts previous experience as manager of German club Schalke and Dutch sides FC Twente, Feyenoord, and Vitesse.
